The education minister has again defended the 90% quota reserved for Bumiputera students in the matriculation programme.

May 17, 2019 8:00 AM

“If we want to change this, saying we are in the new Malaysia and that we do not need the quota system, then we must also ensure that job opportunities for Bumiputeras are not denied,” Maszlee told a forum at Universiti Sains Malaysia yesterday. Prime Minister Dr Mahathir Mohamad has described the matriculation programme as a “back door” for Malay students to enter public universities, following calls from some DAP leaders for the removal of the quota system.

“If we can get rid of this , have an equitable job field and equal business opportunities, then we can talk about being fair in all matters,” he said. He also said many non-Malays were well-off and could afford to send their children to private schools.

Jobs r secured on merit. Is it not?

Our universities are NOT producing graduates with the right skill sets that required by the markets 🙄🙄🙄

Too many Malaysians still stupid about their Constitution. The Government by rule of law can do any specific plan for development of pribumis in terms of education & economic plans. That terms was added just at same time as jus soli status given to immigrants in the Constitution.

The harder for students to get into Msia uni is a challenge 4 them 2 succeed in future job. Easy 2 get education but future find no job, if this can be fair to everyone,u will see hope & economy in Msia, bcoz if the good one doesn’t deserve a chance, eventually they will leave Msia

You are just producing graduate who are not competent and low quality. Surely no one want to hire them

If they open the quota, they will close-shop in GE15 🤭

Then remove SJKC or SJKT from the system let be fair to national school, when malays voice out they blamed racist, pathetic DAP

Easy. Look at Russian - no English please. Sadly, 'we' dont have such mentality.

What? Blame job market now...

Forget him. Already. Haha 🤣 and we thought we voted Umno out. Haha 😂 let’s get Umno back and so at least they are honest enough to say they are racists la

Non Malay Malaysians need jobs also. There is no place for them in Civil Service. Not all non Malays are mandarin speaking. If after 50 years of NEP, if the Society has not been re structured, please look into your implementation .

The market always shows demand and supply. If you don’t have the skills and capabilities, don’t blame the market. And language is a skill. There are many who can speak 4-5 languages. If we can’t compete, it’s not others fault. Self denial never help & never build a strong nation!

The present Minister he got UMNO DNA....why TDM still keep him in the cabinet...again he is created disharmony among the Non Muslim and Non Bumi of this nation !!

For the sake of Malaysia, PH gov may want to enact an Equal Opportunity law for Education and Business. Non discrimination whatsoever on race or gender... the edu minister’s comment is disturbing & not forward looking

Yes maszlee.Just like every other non-bumi parents, mine had a magic wand and a money tree in our backyard.Thats what got me through school. My parents didn't work their asses off. It was a walk in the park. 😑

If you don’t have the guts to decide and be firm, go back to do what you know best. Don’t talk like a kid.

I think for saying this Mazlee should resign. This is utter nonsense and idiotic. The firms I have worked with both local and multinational employs many Malays despite many short comings. Sometimes more Malays. Mazlee, you must be blind and pekak!!!

No, one education system, Malay are OK with Sek kebangsaan. Only remove racist requirement for even a job interview.

Another stupid statement...

Who runs the civil service sector?

Well said Mazlee, this issue is Real! Some might try their best to cover this up, its the unwritten rule for some organization, they are smiling reading this, because they know there's nothing u can do

even 3As student can enter matriculations center...and the worst 3As student also can go to India Egypt Indonesia etc to study medicine and appointed as Housemen Officer...

Stop making excuses. If the candidate has +ve attitude, knowledgeable, hardworking, ability to communicate & good, I think he/she will stand a good chance. So stop putting barriers If you don't fix the issues

Market needs the best out of all candidates and my team is a mixture of all talents regardless their background. Mazlee, pls stop the nonsense.

Why not just put the quota for poor people. And leave it at that. The Malay demographics will ensure the vast majority will b Malay anyway. No one will begrudge helping poor people. But I guess too hard to explain this concept after years of racist indoctrination.

Bumiputra preferred, ability to speak Mandarin ..sound familiar? Never seen a job advert saying Indians preferred. Let's all go back to one education system to start with. Our policy is dividing people.

Unfair is due to less competence....market choose the best not the color.

“If we want to change this, saying we are in the new Malaysia and that we do not need the quota system, then we must also ensure that job opportunities for Bumiputeras are not denied,” good job YB maszlee 👍🏼

The job market is not only unfair to bumis alone, you moron, it is unfair to even Indians. Wht kind of education minister are you?
