Three Mile Island's Unit 1 reactor is officially set to be restarted following a 20-year agreement with Microsoft and the Constellation Energy Corporation.

FILE - In this May 22, 2017 file photo shown is the Three Mile Island nuclear power plant in Middletown, Pa. Forty years after Three Mile Island became synonymous with America's worst commercial nuclear power accident, the prospect of bailing out nuclear power plants is stirring debate at the highest levels of Pennsylvania and the federal government.

As part of the power purchase agreement, Microsoft will buy energy from Unit 1 in order to launch the Crane Clean Energy Center and power data centers with carbon-free energy, according to a news release from the company. The release explained that Unit 1 is completely independent of Unit 2, which was shut down in 1979 following what is considered one of the worst nuclear accidents in the history of the United States.

“Pennsylvania’s nuclear energy industry plays a critical role in providing safe, reliable, carbon-free electricity that helps reduce emissions and grow Pennsylvania’s economy,” said Governor Josh Shapiro in a news release.
