Colorado Gov. Jared Polis signs multiple bills as, from left, state Sen. Kerry Donovan , Lt. Gov. Dianne Primavera and state Rep. Dylan Roberts look on Friday, May 17, 2019, in Vail, Colo. By Orion Donovan-Smith Orion Donovan-Smith Email Bio Follow May 24 at 4:39 PM A new Colorado law will ensure that those living with diabetes will spend no more than $100 per month on insulin, making it the first state to limit the cost of an increasingly expensive medication millions of Americans rely on.
The bill Gov. Jared Polis signed into law Wednesday will take effect in January 2020, the Denver Post reported, capping monthly co-payments and requiring insurance companies to absorb the additional cost. The law does not limit what insulin manufacturers can charge insurers. The legislation was introduced by State Rep. Dylan Roberts , who lost his younger brother, Murphy, to type 1 diabetes, CBS Denver reported.
“We have been hearing stories and reading disturbing news reports for too long,” DeGette said. “People are skipping doses, failing to pay rent or buy groceries, and even resorting to an insulin ‘black market’ in order to afford their insulin.”The Colorado bill cites a 555 percent rise in the cost of insulin, adjusted for inflation, over the past 14 years.
Yes that's clever, restrict the cost and eliminate insulin just like Jimmy Carter did with gasoline
1. Guess who is going to be last in line for insulin shipments? 2. Guess whose residents with diabetes are going to see their healthcare premiums skyrocket? 3. Democrat coordinated ruse to scare people into wanting Medicare for All. Then, everyone’s taxes go through the roof.
So insurance rates will rise to cover it. Thou shalt eat the cost is not a plan.
for 'eat', read 'pass on'
This is the way it should work... Force insurance companies to do the right thing. In turn they can choose to 'force' the drug companies to stop gouging.
Good way to force the insurance companies to spank back at the pharmaceutical companies. They haven’t bothered because they didn’t need to.
Now explain why Insulin, which has been around since 1919 or so keeps going so high in price? Because they patent has never been closed, so keeps being sold? What good will it do to keep improving it to the point that people cannot afford it? Saving lives or $$$
People forget their history. Way back under George W when they passed medicare part D the Republicans fought and got a provision that medicare could not get a bulk discount on drugs. Had to pay full price! Repubs have NEVER been on the peoples side on heathcare in any way!!
What isn't surging? No inflation? Has anybody looked at the price of food?
Price caps on all drugs are a EXCELLENT way of controlling the cost of healthcare. Hint to Medicare and Obamacare!!!!!! JayPealer
Proud of GovofCO and RepDianaDeGette for bringing awareness to this and for passing this legislation. Colorado, forwarders in the nation!
If my wife dies because we can't afford insulin, I'm coming for some republican pancreases. Gonna make a necklace out of them.
Insurance isn't paying anything.
The cost of meds in this country is a total scam. Shenanigans between insurance industry and Big Pharma must stop.
The news :The price of insuling is surging.... Rest of the world :only in america.
The price of insulin is scandalous. My father, sister, and aunt were all Type1 diabetics; my sister especially had difficulty paying for her drugs, test stips, needles, and proper food. The GREED is killing people.
Funny what happens when your customers can't afford your product, you lower your price or go out of business. Brokeahontas should steal this idea
