A 26-year-old trades assistant had been on the job less than three months and had received no relevant prior training when he was killed in a workplace incident at a Kalgoorlie engineering firm, a court has been told.

He said neither Mr Grubb or the telehandler operator had completed training regarding exclusion zones, which he said were common practice in the industry to ensure workers are at least 3 metres clear during operation."He was a vulnerable employee who would have benefited from a system of work ... it was a failure of training," Mr Pontré said.

Defence lawyer Adam Sharpe leaves Kalgoorlie Courthouse with some associates after appearing for engineering firm Monadelphous.Mr Sharpe argued the scale of the offending was "mid-range" in a "very complex case", saying there had been no prior incidents at the Kalgoorlie workshop. Mr Pontré told the court it was the "closest analogy" to the Monadelphous case and could be used as a "yardstick" during sentencing.
