KUALA LUMPUR: The cargo division of Malaysia Airlines Bhd, MAB Kargo Sdn Bhd is ready to tap into the global halal market worth US$2 trillion per annum, now that its halal shipments handling capability has received the Malaysian halal certificate.

The certificate was issued by the Department of Islamic Development under the Prime Minister’s Office.“I am happy to share that MASKargo is now part of the halal logistics chain; ready and capable of tapping the market,” its chief executive officer Ibrahim Mohamed Salled said in a statement today. He said MASkargo had worked with Jakim to review and amend all processes to meet the strict requirements of maintaining halal integrity. They also added additional facilities to maintain the separation between halal and non-halal shipments.

“We are probably the first cargo terminal operator in the world to be classified as a halal cargo handler by a globally recognised Islamic affairs regulator for halal products,” said Ibrahim. Following the certification, MASkargo shipped 720kg frozen food to Japan under its Halal Logistics service, via flight MH 088 which left Kuala Lumpur at 11.30pm on June 24 and arrived at Narita International Airport at 7.40am the next morning.Commenting on the shipment, the general manager of Nippon Express Halal Logistic Division Roslan Osman said the reality of an integrated halal supply chain was made possible by collaboration between stakeholders in the halal ecosystem.
