KUCHING: Sarawak's orchids can be commercialised for the international market, says Datuk Patinggi Abang Johari Tun Openg.

The Chief Minister said the state could tap into the growing popularity of Malaysian orchids, which were now exported mainly to Japan, Europe and Australia.

"Therefore, there is huge potential for Sarawak as we continue to improve on research and development, product innovation and commercialisation to meet the rising expectations of discerning customers," Abang Johari said at the opening of the 13th Asia Pacific Orchid Conference at the Borneo Convention Centre Kuching on Wednesday .

"Such rare species are part of our natural heritage that has been drawing tourists and offers great potential in tourism and research and development," he said.
