How this video game company will keep Mars astronauts healthy:

. The grant will provide funding for Level Ex to create a virtual simulation that can show how human anatomy and medical procedures will differ in space versus on Earth. Eventually, the company hopes to create medical video games that can be used to train astronauts on health situations they may encounter while in space. Level Ex has made many exciting products over its four year history, says founder and CEO Sam Glassenberg, but “this one is something special.

Deep space poses another problem: a communication lag. Right now, if astronauts on the International Space Station need to talk with a doctor they can reach one with only a couple seconds of delay depending on where they are relative to the ground station. So if a crisis medical situation comes up, a doctor on the ground can almost immediately guide the astronauts through it. The farther away our spacecrafts go, however, the longer the communication lag between crew and ground support.

For example, let’s say a member of the crew has a heart attack en route to Mars. A Level Ex simulation displayed on a monitor could show other crew members in real time how to position themselves in microgravity to deliver pressure to the chest of the person receiving CPR for the best results.
