The best way to set the stage for better Canadian leaders’ debates could not be clearer: Destroy the commission the Liberals cynically designed

Halfway through Thursday night’s French-language debate, things were looking pretty civilized. There wasn’t much crosstalk as the five federal party leaders faced off civilly on their climate-change plans and on the economy. No doubt that’s in large part because the mostly anglophone leaders’ brains were working too hard trying to keep up in French to allow their mouths free rein.

The commission didn’t set all those rules. The Canadian Debate Production Partnership, whose bid the commission chose to host the debates, set them. Mostly, though, we should blame the Liberal government of Trudeau for foisting this farce upon us in the first place. The 2015 election saw an unprecedented five debates — Maclean’s, TVA, the Munk Debates, The Globe and Mail! — and the Liberals want us to believe they tried to regulate it because it was undemocratic for Stephen Harper to have turned down the English-language consortium debate.

Trudeau is fired his last day is oct 21 will al corrupted action he must be in court

There should be 3 English debates, one in western Canada, one in central Canada and one on the east coast. This yrs debates literally ignored CDN’s outside central Canada.

Why not a debate just between Trudeau and Scheer

Chris as a Canadian and part of the real editorial establishment meaning 'A REBEL' then do not comment.....as a NP fake representative you're lucky to cash in a weekly docket___read my lips Chris...your a shameful liberal Canadian....

As a start: 1- Exclude Leaders without a costed platform 2- Have the leaders agree on the moderators (as seen in arbitration) 3- Allow the moderators to cut off the mic of those who interrupt or go beyond the time allotted 4- Keep fringe media from grandstanding

Yeah cause the debates in the US are so much more constructive and policy driven.
