Racehorse owner John Hartigan said the emergence of shocking animal cruelty footage shows that horse racing's regulators have been 'asleep', as Peter V'landys downplayed concerns about the problem in NSW.

The footage drew condemnation from all corners of the racing industry, including breeders, trainers, betting companies and sponsors, and came on the eve of The Everest, the world's richest turf race held at Royal Randwick on Saturday.

No person has ever been prosecuted for breaching Racing NSW's policies against the slaughter of retired racehorses, which carries disqualifications and fines of up to $100,000. The fund is bankrolled by taking one per cent of all prize money generated, although only half a per cent will be taken from the $14 million Everest race. This was because only half the prize money was provided by Racing NSW, Mr V'landys explained. But secretary of the NSW Trainers Association Glenn Burge warned the actions of regulators were "clearly not enough".

Multiple agencies across Queensland spent Friday shifting the blame after Meramist, an abattoir north of Brisbane, was found to be slaughtering an estimated 4000 race horses a year.

Peter V’landys through his blatant denial is part of this huge problem. Shame on you.

Oh, yes, “a few bad apples”. That old chestnut.

They're in damage control mode. They will wait it out until public lose interest. then back to the status quo. Anyone checked what's happening to dog racing since it was reported?

Why is it up to a governing body to tell the people who own these majestic creatures not to be cruel? Really? horseracingkills

Funny how this news is happening during the Everest cup!

Its amazing that a racehorse 'owner' would have no idea where his horses are. Trainer: 'Boss, Horse X was shit today'. Owner: 'Get rid of him'. Trainer: 'Where?' Owner: 'Donate him to an animal sanctuary to live out his days' Trainer: 'Really?' Owner: '🤣'

Majority of those horses were not racehorses, thoroughbreds yes. No racing condition, pulled mane, shiny coat. Horses live till aged change hands often so, sure some were recently off the track, majority were not. As if they can track ALL 350,000 tbs out there into their mid 20's

Isn't there a whole industry behind the disposal of racehorses? This isn't backyard stuff - there must be properties, companies, employees involved in it all. And are there write-offs for tax purposes? The ATO must know.

Asleep? Regulators owners made a choice to look the other way. People make choices everyday. Animals suffer everyday.

Vlandys needs to go. He’s not really interested in protecting thoroughbreds. From his responses to questions and his response to this crisis that’s abundantly apparent.

I like both both football codes of RL and AFL. The NRL will have this guy running the place soon and the AFL Chair is Richard Goyder. Spot the difference in abilities here!!! Good luck the NRL

Peter can only see dollar signs

His media mates will give him a free ride when it comes to the NRL.

I’m surprised everyone is so shocked by this. Don’t people realise that animals are treated appallingly when there’s an industry involved. I am disgusted by humanity’s Inhumane treatment of sentient beings full stop: refugees, whales, cows, racing horses et al!

Peter V'Landys is a disgrace. It was his job to enforce the rules and he turned a blind eye to the doggers.

Close down racing There are no words.

V’landys perfect choice for NRL Chairman; asleep at the switch, people behaving appallingly, killing fields. NRL

Good timing hatchetjob Won’t work

To me, pvlandys has coma across as arrogantly dismissive in the abc730 investigation and in interviews I saw of him yesterday. There’s a lot of “it’s not my fault” it’s the owners. guess what, you’re the boss mate... an easy job when things are going well. Just my opinion.

Ha ha ha ha ha Barry O’Farrell is CEO of Racing Australia 😂😂😂😂 And by-the-way, “racehorse owner and former Newscorp boss” John Hartigan is the nastiest person I’ve ever been in a meeting with.
