There are growing calls for a royal commission into the racing industry after the ABC revealed emails proving Racing NSW was told more than a year ago about the unauthorised sale of thoroughbreds for slaughter at a livestock auction.

Senator Faruqi said all the state agriculture ministers as well as the Federal Agriculture Minister are meeting tomorrow.

The emails obtained by the ABC prove Racing NSW was alerted to the sale of thoroughbreds for slaughter at an unapproved livestock auction as early as June 2018, but refused to rescue one horse or investigate further.revealed hundreds of racehorses were being abused, mistreated and slaughtered at knackeries and abattoirs, in violation of racing industry rules and policies.

The ABC also named two NSW knackeries as having accepted multiple NSW-linked horses at their sites, many via the Camden Horse Sales. "Prior to the interview [with 7.30], Racing NSW was not aware that thoroughbreds were being sold at the facility," Racing NSW said in a written statement to the ABC. Other documents obtained by the ABC also confirm Racing NSW stewards were told in 2018 about gallopers being sold to killbuyers at a second NSW livestock auction.

MehreenFaruqi Ok here is scenario I own a ex race horse I put it up for sale the person who buys it sends it to to knackers. . Who is responsible for the horse ending up at the knackers me for selling it or the person that bought it.

The slaughter of horses should should be made a criminal offence Australia wide! By the Federal Govt!

MehreenFaruqi The only head that needs to roll is the fat faruqi Sheila that shouldn't be here

caromeldrum ....and just how many millions of taxpayer funds will a RC cost? and to what end? The Greens and the socialists at the ABC are world champs at coming up with ways to spend our taxpayer $$ How about a Royal Commission into the need for the ABC , that would be something worthwhile.

We castrate 50% of cattle then slaughter them for food

Give it up abc . Get back to actively promoting cruel halal slaughter as a good thing . Just change your name to shariabc .

Would be nice if Racing NSW could just follow their own rules and policies ...

Who is surprised that ABC is working with Greens nutcase Mehreen Faruqi on this A tiny fraction of horses slaughtered for human consumption or pet food, completely ignoring that 95% are not, and in fact lead pampered lives Stop cruelty in abbattoirs is real issue, not racing

Round up the racing industry leaders and sit them down front row at abattoirs to watch.

Another institution fails Australians, beautiful highly intelligent animals being treated with such cruelty is unimaginable.

Still can't work out why the Racing Industry is copping the flak for this. Horses have been going to the knackery for decades and most of them were race horses, the only issue here is a humane end and this is the responsibility of the Depts of Agriculture to inspect and control.

What a surprise. Another industry organization without ethics. Is there a properly operating business with good governance anywhere in Australia? I need some hope!

What’s the point, the politicians are too gutless to address the issues. Nothing is new here it was all raised during the Greyhounds issue a few years ago and it’s still business as usual

‘Heads need to roll’ but won’t given the essential ineffectual nature of royal commissions. Has any had a positive outcome?

you just want horse racing banned...admit it

No comment intended on the seriousness of this particular case, but does it seem like we are devaluing the idea of a “royal” commission by launching one for just about everything these days?

Heads should roll and not those of the horses who are better bred and are more loyal and trustworthy than their owners
