Hong Kong's Hang Seng benchmark closed down 2.6% after police fired gunshots at protesters, and demonstrations across the city forced schools and offices to close early

The Hang Seng benchmark closed down 2.6%, the fourth-biggest drop of the year, after police fired gunshots at protesters, and demonstrations across the city forced schools and offices to close early.

The ongoing protests have triggered similar selloffs this year, including in August when demonstrators paralyzed the airport, one of the world’s busiest travel hubs. The Hang Seng Index is one of the weakest major stock market performers this year, up just 4%, compared to double-digit gains elsewhere in Asia, the U.S. and Europe.

Among the biggest movers in Europe, shares in bakery chain Greggs rallied 12.9%. The company raised its profit outlook for 2019 after it saw sales jump following the launch of its vegan sausage roll earlier this year. After some optimism around the prospects of a so-called phase 1 trade deal last week, some analysts like Mike Bell, global market strategist at J.P. Morgan Asset Management, have flagged concerns that investors could be disappointed by the scope of any agreement.

It’s obvious that CarrieLam has no clue how to end this protest. More police brutality is likely. It would be wise for investors to stay out of HK market. The worst is yet to come. HSI at 20000 by year end?

選擇性報導是西方對中國的一貫作風

Would be the first time the HSI actually reflects the turmoil HKers' been in because of CCP and HK gov and HK police terrorists reigning with terror for FIVE MONTHS.

HongKongPolice tear gassed Central during lunch time causing the closure of offices. If they have been more constrained, the gathered white collar would have returned to their workplace after lunch. Police just cannot wait to suppress voices.

Money is nothing compared with our lives security. What is the meaning of economy at all , if basically you life is under danger by threat of HongKongPoliceTerrorist?

When the law enforcement team has lost its control, the city will be pushed to a more chaotic and disastrous situation. Economy can hardly recover in a short time...

chinazism IS TERRIBLE. FreeHK

who care hk

hkpoliceforce well done ! You ruined Hong Kong and sunk the ship. CCP rats

With so many tragedies happened, and that the Hong Kong Police did not hesitate (under live cameras) to shoot protesters with bullets and tear gas, aiming at their hearts in close distance, I would say we really can't pretend business as usual. Hong Kong is in a critical state.

The HongKong government has failed to clam down the protests because they are not listening to the people! Repression does not work! Smearing the protests does not work!! CarrieLam has only 20% approval rate and yet Xi gives her full support. THIS IS WHY THE CITY IS DYING.

And rioters are burning civilians!

A Japanese tourist was mistakenly attacked by 'pro-democracy' rioters because he looks like a mainland Chinese... You tell me the so-called protestors are demanding democracy? It is naked Racism! BBCWorld business FT TheEconomist guardian Independent Reuters

HongKong rioters poured gasoline to a man and set him on fire. Now the man is in severe condition. why don't report this?

Tiananmen2019 is happening. What’s the point for stock markets when we have to risk our lives just to go to school or work. It’s a ridiculous world.

The police fired at the students, this is too crazy

No one’s talking about the man set on fire by the protesters lol.

If we burn, chinazi will burn with us
