Senior Australian business leaders have urged the next federal government to address the nation’s labour crisis by boosting migration to fill jobs, warning a failure to do so risks causing a slump in economic growth.

Companies from BHP to small café owners are being hampered by labour shortages. Roles from train drivers to waiters to miners remain unfilled. Cafés in some cases are operating on reduced hours, while BHP was forced to downgrade its production forecasts for its nickel and copper divisions because of staff shortages.

A tight labour market has pushed up wages, which has taken centre stage in the federal election campaign alongside the cost of living and interest rate rises. Shepherd says the inability to fill jobs will lead to higher costs, in areas such as wages, and Australia’s competitiveness declining. Both sides of politics have promised to review the migration levels.Australia’s growing wage pressures come after a decade of low wage growth, where real wages have declined. Across the world’s richest countries, there is a trend of wages growth and rising prices for goods.

Albo and Labor are doing this country a great disservice by implying that all that is lacking is TAFE training and they will provide it and all will be good, high wages for all etc.. The last thing an employer wants to hire is someone who thinks they are owed a job.

The population ponzi scheme is not the answer. The best approach is to train Australians and to provide people with a way to join the workforce. We need to reduce poverty in regional towns. If you think unemployment is really 4%, I've know of a bridge you might want to buy.

There’s plenty of worker’s out there. Just that no one wants your Shit Job for the Shit Pay you’re offering. auspol ausvotes NoLabourShortage

Conditions matter, fair pay and hours are conditions. World market.

maybe training people here instead of getting overseas workers?

Maybe... try offering a living wage?
