The market is hot, especially in the South Bay, for expanding restaurateurs.

The Makableh family opened Mazra in March 2020 — not the most accommodating time — as a conversion of their longtime Green Valley Market at 504 San Bruno Ave. West. Parents Randy and Ahlam Makableh wove in family recipes when they emigrated from Jordan, while sons Saif Makebleh and Jordan co-own and run operations.

"It is not easy," Saif told me."A lot of restaurant groups are looking for expansion and targeting all those places." But when the opportunity comes around for Mazra part three, Saif hopes to eschew"cookie cutter" corridors like Palo Alto's University Avenue for something more"off the grid."
