Australians have itching to travel overseas but have been put off by expensive airline tickets, especially to Europe.

Australians are keen to travel again but are baulking at the high prices for international flights, especially to Europe, according to travel agents.

But Australian Federation of Travel Agents chief executive Dean Long said it was mostly corporate trips and family visits that dominated the European summer as prices were roughly double that of pre-COVID levels. A business class return trip costs between $10,000 and $20,000, while an economy class ticket could set you back $6000 – about double the price in 2019.

Family-favourite destinations like Fiji are the top pick for travellers, but there have also been some strong demand for the west coast of the United States where return tickets of $1500 to $2500 are available. But if you want to book a flight that is not hideously expensive, you should do it sooner rather than later.
