The Bureau of Plant Industry (BPI) on Wednesday denied limiting the issuance of import permits for onions to select importers, saying it has already issued as many as 290 import permits for onions this year.

“Equally naman po . There are few firms which got import permits, but most of the import permits were secured by the existing ones ,” Sheree Samala, BPI Officer-in-Charge Division Chief, told lawmakers during the resumption of the House agriculture and food committee hearing on the sudden increase in onion prices last year.

“The complaints we are receiving is that there are legitimate importers, but they cannot break in kasi suki na iyong mga ini-issuehan niyan ,” he said. Samala, however, maintained that the BPI is not favoring importers in terms of issuing import permits, formally known as Sanitary and Phytosanitary Import Clearances.

Asked on how many firms got the 290 import permit for onions this year, Samala said 75 companies were granted such permit.
