Yamamoto went back to school to earn a professional designation in apparel manufacturing from the Fashion Institute of Design & Merchandising in Los Angeles. Despite having experience in retail fashion overseas and a US professional designation, she was only offered unpaid internships. Frustrated, she explored starting her own children's clothing line, but this would take time to start and to become profitable. Yamamoto needed to make money now.
Yamamoto found a high-quality salmon oil manufacturer that had low order minimums. However, to be a success on Amazon, you need to fulfill orders quickly, which means you have to have inventory. She challenged herself and ordered more than the minimum order. The added benefit was that the quantity she ordered qualified for volume discounts. Within a month, inventory ran low."Each subsequent order grew bigger and bigger," she noted.
"Forget the clothing business," Yamamoto concluded."Selling pet supplements could be a huge business." She applied to the Tory Burch Fellowship program. Fifty women entrepreneurs who are passionate about growing their businesses, go through a four-day leadership training, build a community of support with peers from around the country, receive a $5,000 education grant, and some would be allowed to pitch investors and business leaders.
