its 2019 Payments Study — an annual report reflecting 2018 data. In a big-picture sense, the report showed noncash transactions continue to rise, hitting 174.2 billion payments worth $97 trillion last year, up from 143.6 billion payments and $87 trillion in 2015 .These gains were predominantly from card payments, which represented three-quarters of noncash payments and grew approximately 9% annually from 2015 to 2018 — three percentage points faster than its annual growth between 2012 and 2015.
These payments are closing the gap with in-person transactions — their value was about equal in 2018, though there remains a large volume gap — but a higher number of low-ticket remote purchases and more frequent remote payments indicate habit formation and should precede ongoing growth.
