SHANGHAI - The food market where China's deadly virus surfaced was a smorgasbord of exotic wildlife ranging from wolf pups to species linked to previous pandemics such as civets, according to vendor information and a Chinese media report.

A price list circulating on China's Internet for a business at the Wuhan market lists a menagerie of animals or animal-based products, including live foxes, crocodiles, wolf puppies, giant salamanders, snakes, rats, peacocks, porcupines, camel meat and other game - 112 items in all. China bans the trafficking of a number of wild species or requires special licences, but regulations are loose for some species if they are commercially farmed.

The paper also quoted other merchants as saying that trade in wildlife took place up until the market was shuttered for disinfection shortly after the outbreak. But this brings growing human health risks, said Dr Christian Walzer, executive director of the US-based Wildlife Conservation Society's Health Programme.

"It is essential to invest resources not only into discovering new viruses, but more importantly, in determining the epidemiological drivers of... spillover, amplification, and spread of infectious diseases."

No kidding, rats and wolf pups? What's happened with chicken, fish, veggies, pork and beef?

JustAnimals_ When you eat everything dead or alive, then something like this will happen.. Karma is sweet..

Is there nothing the Chinese will not eat?

No es raro, se comen todo lo que se mueva. 🙄

Wolf pups ☹️

ok rats i understand. in times of famine, there were a lot of countries that had to find other source of food. insects, snakes, rats, etc and that somehow stayed with them eg. vietnam, myanmmar, cambodia. but wolf pups? wtf?

Savages

What goes around comes around! Call it KARMA!

How utterly disgusting.

Karma is sweet. Power to the animals 🐾

Years ago my friend from Hong Kong (before handover) said to me of China: “mainland Chinese are disgusting, they eat anything. The only thing they won’t eat with 4 legs is the kitchen table.” That has stuck with me for all this time and it’s still true today.

They’d eat anything

It's from Wuhan seafood market. It's horrible...

Pinche chinos 😭

I love farmers markets. Are rats in season?

PepeNature No surprise 🙁

Surprise surprise 🤢

How do people even eat rats for crying out loud? Smh

Why doesn’t China crackdown on these types of markets?

AtTostao Esa vaina de comerse lo que sea que respire les está cobrando caro. 😧

Charming...🤮🤮
