A renowned professor of History, ‘Siyan Oyeweso, has said that communities, and not the government, should be responsible for the payment of salaries of their royal fathers.

He explained that communities needed to take up the responsibility given the roles they play in ensuring peace and seeing to the safety of their people.

He said the centre had concluded arrangements to bring together traditional rulers nationwide to discuss and proffer solutions to security challenges facing the country, in recognition of their relevance to the security of lives and properties in their domains. He gave the theme of the summit as ‘Security and insecurity in Nigeria: Role of the traditional institution’.

He added, “Nigeria has never had it so bad in terms of security. It is nauseating that even traditional rulers have become victims of kidnapping and banditry. It is a shame on our humanity and a failure of the state.
