The music industry was in crisis just a few years ago. Sales were cut in half from their peak as single downloads, YouTube and piracy made the CD album go virtually extinct. But music has found its white knight: streaming.

Last year, recorded music revenues in the United States went up by 13% to $11.1 billion — the highest level since 2006. That persuaded Warner Music Group and Universal Music Group, two of the biggest music companies that represent stars like Bruno Mars and Taylor Swift, to announce plans to go public.Music streaming is in the middle of a boom.

Wireless high speed internet networks had to built, technology with smartphones and headphones had to improve, new music streaming services needed to be adopted by millions of people, and record companies had to license music to them. Those services then had to persuade people to pay a monthly fee for music, even if they already owned songs and albums. All of that happened, and that's what has led us to today, Miller added.

Going to a concert cost a fortune for most artists, meet and greets are robbery I just watch the concert in a few weeks for free on you tube

Oh really. It's as though music fans told the industry in the early 90s what they had to do. Instead of listening they attacked us. Tried to criminalise streaming and mp3s. Lesson: Listen to your customers!

Modern music is shit TBF.

Let's not get ahead of ourselves. The end of the piece suggests executives are trying to 'manage the risk' of streaming numbers dropping off, but how? Is there a plan for an unknown future? Also, the better music should be promoted more, shouldn't it?

Is hars to do the streaming when YouTube remove 67M views from the MV you are streaming. And they doing it now to BTS YouTubeExplainThis

I like the CD you get info and a nice disc, streaming you don't own anything, its just for the daft kids, but then again i have taste in all things beautiful.

People should check out Tom Jones. He started his career in 1964, writing 'It's not unusual to be loved' and he still has that amazing voice at age 79, soon to be 80. He currently does 'The Voice UK'

That’s cute but Spotify AppleMusic and any other streaming service are only paying a fraction of a fraction of a fraction of a penny to artists and songwriters for their work.

Record industries intrepid music who's the White Knight CNN any Freemason will tell you I watch too much CNN even though I don't watch a lick cuz you got no stick topgolf gift talk

A huge success for the streaming giants -- and a huge loss for artists.

Spotify is awesome ;) It's something you simply do not mind paying for :)

The music industry did its best to kill streaming when it started - how silly they must feel now.

I enjoy streaming classics from the 60's, 70's, 80's
