While freight trains are slowly starting to move again, business leaders say they are reluctant to move full speed ahead because of the uncertainty

OTTAWA — Business leaders are expressing frustration because of uncertainty with a deal the federal government has struck with hereditary Wet’suwet’en chiefs to solve a pipeline dispute that led to crippling rail blockades.

While freight trains are slowly starting to move again, business leaders say they are reluctant to move full speed ahead because of that uncertainty. Darby said half of his members said in an internal survey they had been hit with extra costs, because of the blockades, and 42 per cent slowed production because they couldn’t get products to market.

In a statement released Monday, the three sides announced the agreement and said it covered both the Coastal GasLink pipeline and the Wet’suwet’en community’s long-standing and unresolved land claim. Blockades that went up in support of the Wet’suwet’en hereditary chiefs have mostly come down, but at least one remains in place near Montreal.

Speaking to reporters in Halifax Tuesday, Trudeau acknowledged the opposition of some Wet’suwet’en leaders to the pipeline has led to difficult times for many Canadians over the past few weeks. He said his government has been focused on trying to find a solution, but added that current tensions stem from centuries of marginalizing Indigenous Peoples in Canada.

Trudeau desperately needs positive press on this. If anything was actually resolved he’d be shouting it out via his bought & paid for media. If it is a crappy deal for Canadians he will keep it buried. Now go reach ur own conclusion. cdnpoli

punditclass The obvious deal here was to have that offer presented and in return have the WET chiefs declare in earnest.. for the blockades to come down ...: neg 101 .. fair

Do something man... Then tell us about it... What hell is going on here?

Of course not. Even if there is a 'deal' ... it'll be temporary. The First Nations are never happy. This agreement was a 10yr negotiation before a shovel hit the ground. It was all approved to go! Construction began with routes approved. Then FN people chnaged their mind.

Why is the deal so secret?

Of course nothing was resolved. scottfraserndp is an incompetent sellout.

Centuries of mishandled and often abusive Indigeneous policies and now First Peoples are using white man’s laws to fight back. Sweet irony.

Climate change. Racism. Same ole shit.

Do the other chiefs get a deal too?

The liberals gave away the farm

JT can’t wait for the taxpayers of Canada to find out what this cost.🤮 craziness

Of course not. Trudeau couldn't find his ass with a map, did anyone actually think he would fix this?

K4C They were out protesting again today where I live in BC

Trudeau addressed Indigenous land rights ac rising to UN Declaration on Indigenous people in relation to Wetsuweten people but that is where it stops. The pipeline opposition and questions surrounding signing Benefits agreement with The Province bc still unresolved. cdnpoli

Definitely nothing was resolved.

Guess what the answer is!

Nope.

No There is no “Wet'suwet'en” deal They have been negotiating with the wrong people from the beginning

Frustrated business leaders should do better at securing Indigenous consent.
