The Dow Jones Industrial Average early Tuesday morning DJIA, +0.97% fell below a psychologically important level at 20,000 as uncertainty about the responses to the COVID-19 pandemic quashed an early rebound off the worst day for stocks since 1987.
The Dow was most recently off 13 points, or less than 0.1%, but had touched an intraday low at 19,882. Stocks broadly had retreated from opening gains, with the S&P 500 index SPX, +2.65% up 0.9% at 2,408, after touching an intraday high at 2,463, and the Nasdaq Composite Index COMP, +2.53% was up 0.5% but had touched a Tuesday morning high at 7,118.
