Karina Funk's Brown Advisory Sustainable Growth Fund is outperforming other socially-conscious funds and attracting more money as a result.Karina Funk runs an ESG fund for Brown Advisory, and she told Business Insider how she uses environmental, social, and corporate-governance criteria to find companies that generate the biggest returns.
She revealed how she finds companies that generate strong returns in spite of relatively slow growth, and the most important elements of her strategy. For example, there's her trick of running a socially conscious ESG fund that consistently beats the rest of the market. Then there's her tactic of finding companies that don't look like strong growers on the surface but pack more punch than expected.
"Our search for sustainable business advantages, I think, helps us uncover some of the most persistent sources of value creation in any industry," she told Business Insider in an exclusive interview. Rather than investing only in green energy companies or in firms that set a good example, Funk wants companies with "sustainable business advantages" that breed more efficiency, higher revenues, lower costs, and improvements in the image and value of their brands.
