A review of Victoria’s troubled security firms, released by the Andrews government amid coronavirus outbreaks spread among guards at the state’s quarantine hotels, details an industry beset by poor hiring practices and contentious subcontracting policies.

The Andrews government review, that covers the industry and the state’s 33,000 licensed guards, was released last week, days after guards were cited as the likely source behind outbreaks.

Unified Security provided guards at the Rydges on Swanston hotel, where one of the two quarantine hotel outbreaks occurred. “The industry is characterised by a workforce that is highly casualised, relatively low-paid and transient,” the paper found. It said on-the-job training seldom occurred because most employers were not “willing to invest in casual or transient staff”.

In the security industry, it means that this employee “may no longer receive employment entitlements such as overtime, penalty rates, and leave”, the review said. One of the three security firms selected by the government without tender and at less than 24 hours notice to guard potential coronavirus infected returned travellers is Unified Security.Registered and owned by New South Wales residents, the firm had guards working at nine of around 15 hotels used by the government to house travellers.

Unified Security, asked about how it came to be selected, said in a statement: “As Australia’s largest indigenous owned private security company, we were appointed to provide services in line with the Victorian government’s procurement guidelines.”

Bahahahaha no shit Sherlock

Omg they needed a review to learn that?!

Everybody knew that except the Victorian government, it seems.

Liarbor has not learnt a thing from their hasty Pink Batts mess. Getting things done properly is no just throwing money around to your mates.

Oh just a shit Premier!

Unified security Indian owned more likely undercutting everyone with poor work ethic this kind of behaviour should be dealt with now look at the mess we have and there based in Sydney

I think we’d be better off without government at all. Like seriously. They literally fuck everything up. Can’t even keep people in quarantine in 5 star hotel for 2 weeks.

Thanks, neoliberals.

Casualisation no ownership a disposable asset.

Another story where we see the mighty power of the penis taking charge of the situation. 🎼when🎹🎺🎷will we ever learn🎷🎺🥁it’s always either the mighty dollar or the mighty sword that leads straight to a predictable outcome eh?

I don't understand. Is there ANYONE in authority who didn't already know this was a thing?

MELBURNIANS!! The Pr...S that are promoting the spread of COVID are probably LNP motivated!! OUR Footy players having to go NTH. & our BUSINESSES delayed re- opening because of them!! FINES etc. cannot be BIG enough!!😡😷

.DanielAndrewsMP leader of steel.

The security industry is biased and racist, the majority of security guards are born overseas

Another triumph for the Victoria Police who regulate the industry DanielAndrewsMP ?

So pathetic they need an inquiry for this complete incompetence. The fact they called for an inquiry needs an inquiry .
