Many young university graduates have been stuck in low paid jobs since the global financial crisis and there are concerns the coronavirus pandemic will further fuel these challenges.

Young Australians facing a dire job market during the coronavirus pandemic risk being trapped in low-paying jobs for years.

Melbourne University student Xavier Dupe said he was concerned about finding work in the current economic climate.Melbourne University arts student Xavier Dupe, 23, said the uncertainty of the current economic crisis had reaffirmed these fears. “The problem is not with us being job ready, it is with jobs being available to us.”

While the aftermath of the GFC has not been characterised by a stubbornly high-unemployment rate, there has been an increase in part-time employment among young workers. University student Catherine Robertson will graduate from her degree studying arts history this year, but plans to return to study teaching to improve her employment prospects. “The current situation has definitely illustrated to me that now is not the time to go into the job market,” she said.

"For graduates who found employment lower down the ladder, it was difficult to recover," the report read.

Seeing as asians caused this why use one in the pic? 🤔

No that’s life experience it stop complaining about it..

Unfortunatley knowledge and education does not pay today, despite the personal sacrifices. This is a consequence of the so called free market.

GFC and the current crisis only accelerate the decline of labour in the production of goods and services. The social contract looks shaky.

So many uni degrees are useless but expensive bits of paper.

No sympathy. Are these the same young people marching about climate change bullshit? Cos it's climate change BS which is killing business and will keep them in low paid jobs.

Did they come to study or for a high flying job?

Yawn.........was the same when I left uni in 1986 with the Keating recession in 1991, NEXT.

Hard Fact is it much harder for older generation to get back to work (once out of work) as employer are happy to replace them with younger one.

First thing there taught, someone hurts your feelings.... block block block.

Aussies have round eye Pappa San round eye. Ancestors stole crust of bread in land of Great White Queen across the sea.

Everyone's got to start at the bottom.

But they have a job? Unlike some others. Why is this a story?

Oh well, they are getting a taste of the real world. Life can be tough for everyone.

Maybe so may people have degrees that once never needed a degree to get the same job?

Can I just say, the corona virus wasn't planned. The healine suggests this is a problem only for uni grads A lot of people are in the same boat as uni graduates.

Miss “Shi” is not Australian

More entitlement ' I expect a high paying job because I went to Uni' .. really? Get into the real world. What a high paying job, then earn it or create it yourself

Welcome to the REAL WORLD kiddos.. Most people are underemployed. reality getagrip realityslap auspol

Maybe that art degree was a waste of money 🙄

So.. They expecting high paid jobs since they havnt 'qualified' yet. Pfft... Cry me a river.

Not everyone is capable of performing on the high level or having a high paid job. Get over it.

Haha . You never show an Australian

Someone tell SBS that before corona virus people were getting low paid jobs. What is the news again?
