The CEO of Skillshare, which just raised $66 million in funding, swears by this simple 3-stage growth model that tells you who to hire and when

Founded in 2010, the online learning platform Skillshare recently closed a $66 million Series D funding round, marking a sevenfold increase in its valuation since July 2018.

What started as a company running in-person classes for the creative, business, and tech industries now has 12 million registered global members, 8,000 teachers, and more than 30,000 classes. There are three stages to growth, Cooper said. He calls them "jungle," "dirty road," and "highway." He got the metaphor from Gary Swart, the former CEO of the freelance platform oDesk , where Cooper held several VP roles.

As your company starts to grow, you get to the "dirt road" stage — you're starting to pick up speed, but there are challenges ahead. Here, you start to hire some specialists to work out the more complicated issues, but you still need your handymen, too. When you find your focus early, you can build a better product for your customers. It will also help you decide who you're trying to target. "It's amazing how much stronger your business can be when you make the simple decision about who you're serving and who you're not going to serve," Cooper said. Capital is vital for startups.
