Amazon's per-unit shipping and packaging costs fell to their lowest level in more than 8 years, but now the company is on a major hiring spree to meet rising demand

This story is available exclusively to Business Insider subscribers.Amazon spent $1.64 in fulfillment cost per unit in the second quarter , the lowest in over 34 quarters, according to Morgan Stanley.

Amazon is expected to significantly increase its investment in logistics, as seen in Monday's announcement to hire 100,000 new employees in warehouse and shipping positions.Amazon's cost for packing and shipping each product on its site dropped to the lowest level in over 8 years last quarter, reflecting the company's growing efficiency in its logistics network.
