The U. S. Customs and Border Protection says it has signed a $13 million contract to equip its agents with body cameras, after years of lawsuits and immigrant deaths increased pressure on the agency to boost accountability.

Since then, Axon says it has bolstered the security of its Evidence.com portal, which automatically creates an audit trail of all online actions and has a remorse period for deleted materials, a company spokesperson said. The spokesperson added that the new Body 3 cameras being used by the CBP use encrypted messaging to authenticate videos transferred to the online portal, an upgrade from previous models.

“To trust us to be on those agents to help them protect truth, and increase that level of transparency,” says Richard Coleman, Axon’s VP of federal contracts, “that’s the reason we wake up every day: to have that relationship with the Customs and Border Protection agency.” I serve as assistant editor for Forbes Innovation, covering cybersecurity and venture capital.
