A founding member of 'The Try Guys' with 7.3 million YouTube followers launched a tea company that sold out in less than a day. Here's how he started and managed a successful business during the pandemic

This project picked up steam in March, which, for those keeping score, was the beginning of what would prove an endless quarantine. Part of me knew this project — tea that helps people find motivation, purpose, and peace — was more vital now than ever. But as I saw unemployment numbers skyrocket, I felt compelled to give back more.

All these choices simultaneously seem irrelevant and earth-shatteringly important. Faced with a mountain of tasks, I remember feeling almost paralyzed with inertia.First was getting the tea. I looked into drop shipping, but I knew I wanted tonew tea blends with specific flavors and intentions in mind, so I needed a partner. I turned to Steve Schwartz from Los Angeles' Art of Tea to bring this vision to life.

I'm summing up months of stress and agony in a way that makes this all seem effortless, but the process was rife with failure. Already claimed domain names, blown deadlines, COVID-19-related shipping complications: It took me over a month to land on a brand name that I could clear through the trademark process. I wanted to quit more times than I can count.

My biggest advantage on this journey was my audience. After the first episode, some people started sending in fan art. And through that, I found Jessie , a graphic designer from Perth, Australia. As soon as I saw her art, I knew we had to work together. She's a recent college graduate, meaning her rate is worlds more affordable than design firms', some of which charge upward of $10,000.

Again, if you're just in this to make money, you're probably going to make something bad, and when the going gets tough, you'll take the easy exit. But if you have that deeper sense of purpose and passion in what you're doing — ikigai — this isn't just a job, it's your reason for being.
