'If implemented as currently drafted, innovative new medicines will not launch in Canada, depriving patients of potentially life-changing new treatments'

The new rules are set to come into force in January and will apply to new drugs that are still covered by a patent.

“If implemented as currently drafted, innovative new medicines will not launch in Canada, depriving patients of potentially life-changing new treatments,” she said in a statement. Adams said the government is attempting several reforms at once and it should be taking it one step at a time. He said some or all of the reforms might reduce prices, but they might also limit access and by applying all the reforms at the same time, it will be impossible to tell which are working.

Health Minister Patty Hajdu was asked about the drug in question period last week and said the government has contacted the company to encourage it to bring the drug to Canada. Nigel Rawson, an affiliate scholar with the Canadian Health Policy Institute, said the pricing policy sends the wrong signal to companies thinking about where to launch new drugs.

You want “Use it or lose it” patent laws? Because that’s how you get “Use it or lose it” patent laws.

Does the Canada help drug companies by providing funding for research? If yes, then why doesn't Canada get royalties?

Why do these articles always fail to acknowledge the blatant greed that is driving companies to deny access to medicines because they want more money? Price is king to these companies. Why is no one questioning their motivation instead of blaming government?

pattyhajdu and then there is the cold hard truth of extortion

Greedy scum. Time for nationalization since these assholes seem to care more about profit than helping the sick.

This is complete bullshit. Canada has the second or third highest drug prices in the OECD depending on the numbers you look at. Last I checked drug companies didn’t pull out of all those countries.

showing us how sick drug companies are profits before people that's pyscho bigpharma canada healthcare

No they won't. That is every sleazy corporation's play.

Drug companies are a mafia. They suck our blood to fatten themselves. It’s long past the the time when Canada looked for suppliers & supplies elsewhere. DrugCompanies

No they will not!!!! Use the New Zealand approach.!!!

Hahah.. they didnt say that to Trump who is reducing drug prices for all americans.

Wouldn't this open up the market up for new companies to move in? Isn't it suspicious if this does not happen?

Is a gouge just a tool or an assumption of business first quality of life last?

Good.

But, but... Don’t they know about “sunny ways”? Maybe the Liberals can nationalise the drug companies with their never ending shift to the left... cdnpoli

Liberal run Canada: no money, no jobs, no medicine, no hope.

Simple.... slap the tax and let them jet....

Guys, if it’s one thing I know about drug dealers, it’s Don’t Mess With Their Money

They said that to mulroney, blah, blah, blah.

Yep Venezuela here we come

Good , see ya scum. Take your crap away. We don’t want it

Not a credible threat! Many new drugs are being tested in China, with even lower drug cost. Many drug company don't test new drug in US because of potential lawsuits if something goes wrong. Prescription drugs are already cheaper in Canada!

Nice bluff

Who cares? A lot of the best generics are produced in Canada.

Bs

With Lieberals in office CAD will continue to devalue which forces costs up.

Right.

Yeah right

Smoke and mirrors to deflect from brutal showing during Covid

So, the Feds will fund the full price, enriching Trudeau's friends on the Taxpayers back

And our gov will give in because they have no back bone. Canada is a corporate run country with major bailouts from our tax dollars which should be going toward childcare and education.

Same as Trudeau/Singh “tax the rich” ideas. If you take away incentives, people & companies are no longer motivated. Why would anyone take a risk without the potential for gain? The harder you work- the more we take is not motivating.

Good riddance

In part, we gave up our economic sovereignty in the 1988 Free Trade Deal for lower drug prices. We can make our own, and given the instability in the United States, we need to be exploring that. cdnpoli

Wah wah. As long as there is profit to be made, they will stick around.

They didn't abandon NewZealand, so I call BS on BigPharma we need Pharmacare cdnpoli

Thoughts and prayers.

If they do time to end all protections on medications they make and allow a new and thriving generic market? I think that is only fair? Just floating it as an idea if they threaten we ought to just threaten back or we can just seize their assets as a national security concern?

Naah They won't abandon Canada. There is still competition and Canada can get drugs globally. The last companies to supply drugs to Canada will get a big big piece of the pie.

I'd be really interested to see an in-depth treatment of this. The point about too many changes being made at once seems like a potentially valid one.

I need my drugs man

Enough. Secure the old and vulnerable, get on with life. Canada is now building massive internment camps in every province- What is really going on here? I am really just trying to understand the whole picture when: 1) IFR similar to that of an aggressive flu season 2) Public Health is mental health, physical and emotional health 3) People can have a choice not to participate in daily life that is open if they are vulnerable
