James Chin and Azmi Hassan see competition for party posts as a major hurdle. FMTNews PPBM Umno

Two political analysts have ruled out a merger between PPBM and Umno for the foreseeable future.

They were commenting on Umno Youth chief Asyraf Wajdi Dusuki’s call for Prime Minister Muhyiddin Yassin and all PPBM members to return to Umno to unite the Malays. Azmi said PPBM had no reason to rejoin Umno as its members were “quite comfortable” with the current situation in the Perikatan Nasional government, with Muhyiddin in the driver’s seat.

Nonetheless, he said, it would be a boon for the Malay community if the merger were to happen since they would have a formidable Malay party to root for in a general election.Chin said the Malays had shown in the past that they were capable of uniting when faced with a common enemy or threats from non-Malays.“Now you have a government where you have three Malay-Muslim parties,” he said. “So they don’t feel any threat from the non-Malays. That’s why they’re fighting among themselves.
