PETALING JAYA: A decision to drop several senior shuttlers just before the Chinese New Year celebration this week may seem brutal but the Badminton Association of Malaysia (BAM) believe they had to do it anyway.

Yesterday, the BAM severed ties with seniors Goh Soon Huat-Shevon Lai Jemie, Lai Pei Jing , Vivian Hoo and Soniia Cheah after assessing the players’ performance at the recent back-to-back tournaments in Thailand.Of the five players, Soniia and Soon Huat-Shevon still have a chance to qualify for the Tokyo Olympic Games.

“Some may not see it as the best decision, and with the timing too. But the management have collectively decided to do this as a reminder to others, especially the juniors in the team, ” said Choong Hann.“But we are not without a heart. We’ve communicated this decision to the players and have given them the assurance that we will assist them in their transition period – moving out of BAM.
