As restaurants are reopening and people are once again going out to eat, owners are facing a different challenge: Their workers haven't returned.

Chine Nouvelle/SIPA/Shutterstockreached the U.S. and government restrictions set in -- closing indoor dining in much of the country -- millions of restaurant workers found themselves without jobs.

"If you look at who is working in restaurants in 2019 versus today, there's about a million people who have disappeared," said Micheline Maynard, Washington Post columnist and author of the soon-to-be-released book"Satisfaction Guaranteed: How Zingerman's Built A Corner Deli Into a Global Food Community."

Republicans argue that money offered as part of enhanced unemployment packages passed by Congress has taken away the incentive for people to return to work.

People's sense of taste and smell had gone with Covid19 ... Without the Taste and Smell , The Restaurant Industry is ready to be doomed in almost every Country.

I like having takeout options, but I don’t think I’d miss never going to a restaurant to dine in again.

how many of those possible workers have already died of covid? How can young people be expected to go out and get these jobs knowing it might kill them? Or make them sick enough to bring home to a loved one and kill them? Why aren't you talking about the whole big picture?

College football started this weekend And those stadiums were PACKED with a 100,000 people And they were cheering, high fiving and having fun With that being said How can anybody say that their should be a limit on the number of people that can go into a restaurant

The Republican Party of California is working together with our Demarcates partners for the safety of California, Our Children should not be a Test for COVID-19, Let's keep our children safe at home, with Home Schooling, until it is Safe, Home Schooling has always wooked

Gosh I feel so sorry for the restaurants that used to rely on poverty wages and stealing tips from servers to augment others in the restaurant who are actually paid a salary. That model is broken and has been obsolete.

PLEASE 🙏 GOOD LIFE CHOOSING EVERYONE

Maybe all restaurants should put meals in a blender and make people drink their meals through a tiny hole in their mask?

Will you go to a restaurant during the COVID-19 pandemic?

Post something other than covid or I unfollow

People are staying at home drinking beer all day and collecting government free money, Stating ' WHY WORK, when I can do nothing and keep getting money from Biden

Everyone realized 'restaurant work sucks'. Usually awful managers and owners, with the front of the house staff getting screwed. Bad hours, and restaurants are stealing more of our tips to pay back of house employees etc. No wonder there's a shortage.

For years, the restaurant industry was able to pay people low wages because the unemployment numbers were so low. Now they have to come pay the price.

⬇️🔽🔽

Stop forcing people to get vaccinated to work its illegal and its hurting the economy but that's the whole point right

Pay them a living wage and treat them with respect

As we keep saying, 'there is no worker shortage, but there is a shortage of employers paying a LIVING WAGE'. tiredlivingchecktocheck

(Stop paying them permanent unemployment, and this will miraculously fix itself overnight)

Old restaurant model is gone. Innovate outdoor dining. Make it safer for workers. Attract more customers so you can pay workers more. No more tip system. Bring back car hops. Do more deliveries!

The challenge is workers aren't willing to risk their lives during a global pandemic serving unmasked, unvaccinated assholes for $2.35 an hour and ZERO benefits. You want to go to a restaurant? Tell employers: pay everyone a livable wage with benefits so people want to work there

Have seen restaurants offering only pickups and no dine ins, bars not offering any food due to worker shortage. Some offer quite decent wages too.

There is NEVER a shortage of workers, only a shortage of people willing to do hard dangerous work for starvation wages.

Open the borders. There will be plenty of workers then

Maybe these Restaurants should make some food worth eating. I mean before the pandemic, Most restaurants was going out of business anyways. Amazing how people seem to forget that part. Most people learned how to cook at home, And let's be real here - Food is better and cheaper!

Pay them a fair rate!

Can't blame them. Living off tips is BS. That's not a steady income.

good luck

Because many get free money from the government?

Because they don’t pay they work you long hours and give no sick time or paid leave and now we risk getting covid why go back?

💩 management is probably why

pay them more. this is one of the only industries where the employer is not the source of income for the worker, but instead they must rely heavily on tips. maybe the workers are realizing that they can get better jobs elsewhere.

Unemployment just ran out. Give it a few weeks and establishments will see a wave of desperate people suddenly looking for work

They finally figured out they were in a form of modern day slavery. Took them a long time. But the rest of us knew it.

They will once the Democrats stop giving them my tax dollars.

Who can blame them. If they were not included in jobkeeper and their employer's did nothing to secure their return. they've found another So be it!

That’s what happens when you don’t pay your workers a livable wage.

they will now all that money they need to be making anyway is now over , back to being slaves

“Their workers haven’t returned at the wages they are paying,” they mean. Are you getting it?

Unemployment is about to run out. Time to get a jobs losers!

Get back to work!!!! World needs ditch diggers too

Not planning to dine indoors for a while.

Well when restaurant owners were out there saying that his employees didn’t like what they were getting paid and they didn’t like the way they were being treated they could find another job, guess what they found other jobs.

If only there was a way to cut people off from receiving stimul…… wait just a second!

Lazy people

That usually happens when you pay them shit...

The wages are too low and opportunity cost too high; for example cost of child care, transportation, increased Covid exposure risks (for them & families), and more. Barely making minimum wage, taxes and cost of going to work it’s not surprising they’d be in the red.

Workers will return soon - the free rides are about to come to an end. I have no issue helping those that truly need it but let’s face it many are simply taking advantage and unwilling to work

“Restaurants continue to low ball hourly wages, fail to provide safe, equitable work environments & workers are refusing the offers.” There, fixed it for you.

'Their' workers? They don't have any ownership over the people who worked for them in the past. A former restaurant employee is no more 'their worker' than any random person on the street.

Offer better wages and people will come back. Most people have returned to work, just not to crappy jobs with crappy pay
