Tweaks to the tax system and some subsidies for small businesses could help improve the mental health of thousands of Australians and boost the economy by reducing costs on business.

“Employers are really understanding that this is a major issue, so they’re wanting to provide more benefits to their staff,” said Ms Stubbins, who is also the board sponsor of the company’s mental health strategy. “We’re trying to think of everyone here: how do we incentivise employers holistically to help employees with this problem that’s becoming increasingly important.”

“Mental health, broadly speaking across the community, is a massive concern,” he said. “It was a massive concern prior to the pandemic, and it’s only become more of a concern.” The PwC report also suggests the federal government provide small business with subsidies to enable them to provide digital-enabled healthcare, which could increase investment in healthcare and support different delivery channelsMr Worrall said companies like Microsoft or PwC had resources that smaller companies did not, and could provide employees with support. He said the recommendation for a government subsidy for digital mental health services was one of the most important in the submission.
