Simon Birmingham says Australians won’t want Anthony Albanese “sitting at their kitchen table”. Labor’s leader is “energised’ in Perth. Follow updates here.

Finance Minister Simon Birmigham has hit back at Labor’s plan to buy equity in people’s houses, saying Australians will not want Opposition Leader Anthony Albanese “at the kitchen table” with them.

“We are expanding our first home owner as guarantee to 50,000 places per annum, versus a Labor policy that is of 10,000,” Mr Birmingham told the ABC’s“Our policy is about ensuring that Australians get to own their own home. Labor’s policy is about the government owning parts of your home with you. “I think our policies are working, it is helping now really lift the rates of first home ownership, it is delivering outcomes for Australians and importantly you get to own your own home. You don’t have Mr Albanese at the kitchen table with you owning part of your home with you.”

Host David Speers responded: “I guess part of the argument this gives a lot more help to those smaller number of people, 10,000 a year, they could have government help of up to 30 or even 40 per cent of the housing cost? Do you think this is a bad idea, though, what Labor has suggested here?“ Mr Birmingham said: “I think our policy is a better idea and I think when Australians look at the choice of getting that support for more Australians than Labor is offering, to be able to own all of their own home, rather than fewer numbers ... to only owning part of their own home, the Coalition’s policy is a far more compelling argument.”

With the current cost of living caused by the incompetence of the Liberals people can't afford to sit at their dining tables.
