NBN claims Musk’s Starlink is wrecking its business, as telcos slam price hikes | zoesam93

The company operating the National Broadband Network has claimed competition from wireless services including Elon Musk’s Starlink is threatening the viability of its business, as retail internet providers hit out at its plans to sharply raise prices.

The framework determines how much it can charge wholesale customers including Telstra, Optus and TPG Telecom. The proposal was criticised by the ACCC, which claimed it would result in a doubling of the cost of entry-tier internet plans over the next decade and ongoing price rises until 2040. “A significant and growing source of competition in markets in which NBN supplies residential services is from 4G, 5G, fixed wireless network and low-earth orbit satellite operators that are expanding their footprint and aggressively marketing their services as a substitute or alternative to a NBN fixed line service,” it said in its submission.“The extent of competition and substitution risk means that NBN faces substantial revenue sufficiency risk.

“NBN Co’s wholesale prices will rise and increase every year thereafter at a rate higher than inflation, thereby worsening household cost of living pressures and making NBN high-speed broadband unaffordable for many Australians,” the letter, signed by Telstra, TPG Telecom, Vocus, Aussie Broadband and Optus, said.“We believe the long-term interests of end users are paramount.

zoesam93 Thanks for the $50bn white elephant K Rudd. The only winner: Telstra who got to sell their decrepit copper network so Turnbull could f**k things up further.

zoesam93 There was no need for the NBN. There was no market failure necessitating government intervention. The NBN is now not competitive with emerging technologies.

zoesam93 Liberal Party set out to 'demolish' NBN 12 years ago - Go Starlink!

zoesam93 Thank the Liberal party of Australia for ruining this nation building project simply out of political spite and nothing more.

zoesam93 NBN needs to face up to the competition and lift it’s game

zoesam93 NBN is wrecking itself

zoesam93 Maybe NBN_Australia should improve their business then. Fixed wireless and satellite is rubbish and they know it.

zoesam93 Even before Musk's StarLink: I have many colleagues in Sydney that cancelled their perfectly good NBN FTTH (Fibre to the Home) service and replaced it with mobile data modems in their homes. Lots of expensive tax payer funded fibre sitting in their front yard going to waste!

zoesam93 ..yet you claimed Tony Abbott was 'technically clueless' when he said advancing wireless technologies would make NBN redundant. Hmmm.. so TA was right?

zoesam93 It's a bit hard to claim Starlink is wrecking NBN_Australia business, when they don't even provide a usable service and we're within 120km of Adelaide.

zoesam93 its pretty hard to fuck up a monopoly, but somehow, they've done an incredible job at it

zoesam93 Well, well, well.... if it isn't the consequences of your own actions!

zoesam93

zoesam93 Dear NBN_Australia — simply put, do better! Your network deserves to be shown up for the joke that it is. It was barely good enough and then incrementally delivered to lesser and lesser standards.

zoesam93 Lol maybe NBN needs to do better...

zoesam93 Must be a pretty shitty business model
