An upended Arctic Council has left Canada’s Arctic diplomacy flat-footed at a time of dramatic geopolitical realignment. We must expeditiously pivot. Opinion by JShadian

said that although Arctic nations altogether are wealthy, Arctic regions “often suffer higher levels of poverty due to historic discrimination against Indigenous populations, limited infrastructure, and distance from major population centers.” The report recommended U.S. aid be “expanded to other regions such as Northern Canada.”

The U.S. has also engaged in an enthusiastic agenda of soft diplomacy, including strengthening collaboration in mining research and formal diplomatic representation in Nuuk . The U.S. representation sits in a burgeoning Greenlandic diplomatic neighbourhood alongside Iceland, and will soon include the EU and the U.K.

Canada’s sizable Arctic territory and precedence in leading Arctic diplomacy create a robust foundation for its urgent business. We need to:
