Buildings have a dirty secret: they are among the planet’s worst climate offenders

a dirty secret: they are among the planet’s worst climate offenders. Heating, cooling and powering existing offices, homes and factories accounts for 27%

What is more, landlords and homeowners, and the construction industry, have a rotten record on climate change. Only a tiny fraction of properties are carbon neutral, and on the current trajectory it will take nearly a century to decarbonise the rest. As the world urbanises, a dirty building boom beckons: by one estimate, cities will need to add 13,000 buildings every day until 2050, just to keep up with global population growth.

What can be done? The problem can be divided into three parts. The first goal is to incentivise owners to make existing properties more energy-efficient. In the long run, as electricity generation shifts towards renewables, the emissions arising from air-conditioning and day-to-day power use will fall. But retrofitting offices and homes with insulation, cleverer control systems and heat pumps rather than fossil-fuel boilers can have an immediate impact.

Another way to waste money on something that bases its premise on a model that can't predict today's climate. The model is crap and not scientific. Man does not cause climate change. What a hoax!!!

What could be more planet friendly than tearing down buildings to rebuild them. Have we reached peak insanity yet?

Totally disingenuous- most of the houses in Europe were built before any of us were born- many houses were built before the industrial revolution. They should not be torn down and retrofitted only if it doesn’t destroy the character. Nuclear energy is limitless.

The carbon released from tearing down and rebuilding those buildings will faaaaaar exceed their carbon footprint over lifetime. This is extremely shortsighted and incompetent opinion.

Sunk costs are sunk

Why do you want plants to starve?

Honestly, they all look like shit. Which is reflection on how everyone feels.

See it.

hey NWO haha

Mud huts are good in Africa for keeping cool. It's not like you'll own anything, or have access to power so...

The Economist is obsolete. Can be dismantled.

Climate is always changing Models that say humans caused it or can affect it are manipulated by false scientists/activists West's insane CO2 goals create poverty and benefit oil dictatorships Oil, gas, nuclear are all critical, safe and clean sources of energy.

'here's how to reduce it- dont exist' Who tf is running your editorial board these days, bc the garbage you're putting out is absolutely f****ng awful.

Exactly. Well said This recent onset concern over safety and environmental concerns driven by over hyped events however unfortunate has to go if we are to unleash the huge investment (aka exploitative) opportunities waiting for your clients.

That would be a good move.

You guys need to close your company down, nobody believes you.

Aren’t many governments *subsidizing* energy efficiency improvements? How much of the red tape exists because governments want those receiving government subsidies to account for those funds?

“Governments should eliminate red tape”

I like chicken

Trying all the best all the time

N'IMPORTE QUOI. Imaginez si c'était unifamiliale ou un bâtiment unique ? Imaginez un peu la superficie et tout ce qui vient avec ? Une catastrophe pour la terre.

Modern society itself is a climate offender! No resources are infinite. If you want to slow it, the only thing you can do is live like humans did before humans started accelerating what has always been inevitable. The climate lobby is real.
