A federal judge has rejected the Justice Department's bid to block a major U.S. sugar manufacturer from acquiring its rival, clearing the way for the acquisition to proceed.

FILE - Granulated sugar is poured in Philadelphia, Sept. 12, 2016. A federal judge has rejected the Justice Department's bid to block a major U.S. sugar manufacturer from acquiring its rival, clearing the way for the acquisition to proceed. The ruling, handed down Friday, Sept. 23, 2022, by a federal judge in Wilmington, Del., comes months after the Justice Department sued to try to halt the deal between U.S. Sugar and Imperial Sugar Company, one of the largest sugar refiners in the nation.

U.S. Sugar has argued that the acquisition will increase production and distribution of refined sugar and provide a more secure supply. “We are disappointed in the court’s decision not to block this merger, which would combine the world’s largest sugar cane refiner with one of its primary competitors in the Southeastern United States and increase reliance on foreign imports,” Assistant Attorney General Jonathan Kanter said. “Further consolidation in the market for this important kitchen staple will have real-world consequences for millions of Americans.

Sweet! 🍬

We need more monopolies in this Capitalist system of ours. No need for competition in a free market, let the corporations control the prices. That way all the people can point the “ fault finger” at each other while they are busy screwing you

The thought of a monopoly on sugar leaves a bitter taste in my mouth

Prices ⬆️

😳🤢😳🤢 Wow! No anti_competitive practices there - much! 😳🤢😳🤢

Free market capitalism. Nothing wrong here

More INFLATION. Our current inflation problem is built on a lack of competition.

As we learned during the pandemic, most of a supply chain concentrated in one or two companies: what could go wrong?

Another monopoly- prices going up

Whelp, there goes democracy

Monopoly again. Where are the Rooseveldts?

That's how capitalism is done ...

Even our courts are working on replacing democracy with a monopoly. Pretty soon one person will own the United States of America lock, stock, and barrel. Now that is a scary thought. VoteBlueIn2022

These judges favor monopolies which are one of the causes of inflation—no more competition.

This is what is causing inflation. If you only have one company selling sugar, they can charge anything. Price gouging is the base of America’s inflation. Rich companies buying up competitors. This is not the American way, it’s the Russian way.

Sugar is bad for you. You shouldn’t be eating food with added sugar. It leads to obesity

I am so old that I remember when we broke up monopolies. Apparently 45 appointed judges want the rich to get richer and to hell with the rest of us.

Isn't that like encouraging a monopoly?

idk but was it a republican judge ! Lose competition then lose price control - nothing sweet about that

What happened to the Sherman Act?

Good FTDOJ

Oh Goodie! A predictable path for another “baby formula” shortage type of issue.

Like we really need more sugar.....
