Proposal to extend cheap rent for Accrington market traders as cost of living crisis threatens mass exit

A council is proposing to extend a cheap rent concession for traders in its main market until the end of next year.

. A report Hyndburn Council’s cabinet meeting in Wednesday by deputy leader Cllr Marlene Haworth says: “Cabinet is asked to approve an extension to the current rent concessions applied to ground floor market hall traders for a further nine months from April 1 2023 to December 31 2023. “The council, wishing to support the indoor market hall traders, has approved a number of concessions over the past four years. However the current rent concessions will expire at the end of this financial year.

“The traders within the balcony units or outside Peel Street Kiosks will not be eligible for the proposed rent concessions. Historically, there has been no separate service charges applied to the balcony units and rents were set low.
