An Eastern Cape business has been ordered to pay back millions it got from a tender that was irregularly awarded.

On Monday, auditing firm Umnotho Business Consulting was convicted in the Eastern Cape High Court in Makhanda of benefitting from the proceeds of unlawful activities. The company is registered as a non-profit organisation under the directorship of Poovanderen Chetty, 44.

The centres were intended to be a platform where women would be empowered with skills and be able to market items produced by women in small co-operatives. It was reported to the Hawks, and a preliminary investigation revealed that more than R31 million was paid to the company, of which R19.2 million could not be accounted for.
