An Alliance MLA was a paid consultant for a political campaigning company that has left students hundreds of pounds out of pocket after going bust

It was liquidated last year and the brand was sold to Volunteer USA, a company newly incorporated by Rupert Browne who had been working since 2019 as Politrip's general manager. In another message he said: "Sorry I cant be of more assistance but you would need to go through Volunteer USA. They bought the rights to the Politrip name and IP last year and I am not involved with them. Hope you get sorted."

When Patrick Brown was previously the director of Politrip, it sought to charge US interns up to $1,500 to travel to Northern Ireland to volunteer on the 2019 council election campaign.

The 21-year-old said he paid £527 to the company to organise a trip to Atlanta in the US to campaign with the Democrats for around a fornight this summer. He also separately booked his flights, which cost around £1,000. The student, from St Albans in Hertfordshire, England, said participants had a Zoom call with Politrip in January to discuss their trips but afterwards it was "radio silence".
