A young illegal miner sits with his hands bound in police custody after a raid on a mine in Krugersdorp, Johannesburg, 2 August 2022.South Africa and its mining industry are literally"under siege" due to deteriorating security and a crime crisis which is costing the sector R20 billion per year, the Minerals Council South Africa estimates.

Although critical for the South African economy – accounting for 8.7% of GDP and 460 000 jobs – the mining sector is severely impacted by illegal mining, product and copper theft, and the impact of criminal syndicates, which is costing the industry billions each year, according to the council's CEO Roger Baxter.

Surging rates of murder, extortion, and kidnapping are among the signs that organised crime is creating an existential threat for South Africa’s democracy, and"we are bearing the brunt of it," said Baxter who was speaking at an Anglo American Social Development Goals accountability dialogue held in Sandton on Wednesday.Get 14 days free to read all our investigative and in-depth journalism.
