Despite their high labor force participation rate and large spending power, Latinos continue to face significant barriers in wealth, health and education attainment,The Concilio, an organization focused on connecting Latino households to educational, wellness and economic opportunities, surveyed 1,137 adults and 684 high school students and pulled from secondary research to provide insight into the strengths and obstacles of the Latino population.
Latinos make up over 17% of the national workforce. Their labor force participation rate is expected to grow to 22% in 2030 and 30% in 2060. The population is also underpaid, the nonprofit reports. U.S.-born Latinos are underpaid by $198 billion annually, and foreign-born Latinos are underpaid by $233 billion yearly. The analysis attributes Latinos earning less than their white peers while working the same job and being underrepresented in higher-wage positions as some of the key factors contributing to the gap.
Latinos have the highest uninsured rate of any racial or ethnic group in the country, the report found. In Texas, Latino residents are twice as likely to be uninsured than white Texans, and 27% in the state lack health insurance, while 12% of white residents don’t have insurance.
