Amid speculation on his intentions former taoiseach also says questions on who will run for Áras in 2025 are ‘disrepectful’ of current President.

Mr Ahern said he imagined this process will “probably” take a week, adding: “There’s no harm in that once it doesn’t drag on into any lengthy period and I don’t see why it should.”

Mr Ahern said said there was a sense in the EU that in recent years the British Government had been playing a “long game” to get concessions on other issues like finance and insurance that had nothing to do with Ireland. Mr Sunak has been highlighting the benefits for Northern Ireland of being able to trade within the UK internal market while also being part of the EU Single Market, saying it is in an “unbelievably special position”.
