The Toronto Star's owner said tech giants are "stealing" journalists' work and called on business to advertise more on local media. Read on.

To counter these trends, the federal government has put forward Bill C-18, which would require digital giants to negotiate deals that would compensate Canadian media companies for linking to or otherwise repurposing their content online.

He’d like to see the federal government increase its spending on COVID-19, reconciliation and affordability advertising in Canadian media, saying Torstar papers and their digital platforms received 0.27 per cent or less than $400,000 of a recent $140 million budget. Bitove also wants to see corporate Canada increase its local advertising spend, after he heard that “one of Canada’s leading institutions whose values are 100 per cent aligned with our company” spent $50 million on ads last year. His company’s share of that spending was less than one per cent.

I’ll pass

Or maybe people are finally getting tired of the Red Star and have stopped reading it's Bias stories That would impact ad dollars. just saying..

I’ll pass. Newspapers, like the Toronto Star, are dinosaurs.

I only listen to traffic in the car and Bloomberg business news. The rest of the media is opinions that I either agree with or don’t agree with. It’s not informative or useful in my life.

People want true reporting, not government sponsored messaging. The feds are pushing C-11, they’re almost there. When the TS is telling you to support independent media- there’s a tipping point for everyone…

Toronto Star is already getting too much of our money

i hate the toronto star. they are the most biased media in canada. TorontoStar

They need to make the business case.

The Toronto Star? I have a suggestion for the Give back our tax dollars and become a real newspaper not a Liberal rag

The Toronto star is an embarrassment. I wouldn’t use their paper to wipe my backside.

😂😂😂

Pass.

Not 1 dime

In business, if you are relying on people's good intentions to stay in business you have lost.

And everyone should buy Betamax and 8 Tracks.

Do you mean begging? Is this pathetic?

MSM Government Propaganda Machine pusher.

Not a dime.

Which they own through Metroland,

You mean the same local newspaper that promoted disgusting statements about the unvaxxed?

Hilarious, without google we will never find it! 🤡💩

He is on a sinking ship!

Who would advertise in that socialist rag?

Canadian businesses owe nothing to the mainstream media newspapers. When those newspapers were riding high, they did not give local businesses a break on ad rates. They grabbed every cent they could. Now, the chickens have come home to roost.

Why? Are local media incapable of generating funds themselves?

and only to news agencies that thrive on their merit, not government handouts and pay offs. If you recieve one red cent from government, not one cent from business.

Maybe if the Toronto Star needs more ad revenue they should increase their readership, making their ad space more attractive to businesses to advertise with them.

Yes companies love to spend their advertising money on ineffective mediums.

Canadian Business Owners Reply... 'Make your Rag readable and we'll think about it'

Maybe if TorontoStar didn't publish such junk, people would advertise with them...

There is no such thing as local media. Everything is corporate now, and corporate media destroyed their own business model by copying the American fake news outlets. Now no one trusts them. Why would a business advertise with publishers the public no longer trusts?

Need eyeballs first...fix that

Am looking forewards to waving goodbye to the Star and other progressive left rags in the near future

or, increase readership by providing content that is balanced and fair - real journalism the provides facts and not just biased opinions. not sure telling business and services to arbitrarily 'donate' 20% of ad budgets is a good business model.

So the Star can push more of this? No thanks

Local Media owned by Metroland Media Group (media publisher and distributor which primarily operates in Southern Ontario. A division of the publishing conglomerate Torstar Corporation, Metroland publishes more than 70 local community newspapers–including six dailies–and many.
