The Ottawa Senators know finding the right goaltender is crucial if the club is to make the next step to the NHL playoffs next season.

“Clearly at that position it wasn’t a great year,” coach D.J. Smith said Friday. “All in all, expected goals and the save percentage has to be better. That’s something we’ll certainly look at.”

Sogaard is the goalie in waiting. He can play at this level, but he may need more time with the club’s AHL affiliate in Belleville. A check with some NHL executives Tuesday indicated the market is “thin” and the “guys who are available usually are for a reason.”Anaheim Ducks GM Pat Verbeek is open for business with his club in a full rebuild.

The top unrestricted free agent this summer is Joonas Korpisalo. He was dealt to the Los Angeles Kings at the deadline by the Columbus Blue Jackets and the Senators kicked tires on him at that time.
