The Auditor-General has again warned that dysfunctional municipalities are undermining service delivery to those most in need. | JanTamb News24_Business

SA's municipalities are struggling to keep vital infrastructure operating.

The rot that is eating away at the SA's 257 municipalities has not yet been stemmed, Auditor-General Tsakani Maluleke has said, as she again warned of the real-world impacts of crumbling infrastructure, financial mismanagement and dysfunctional leadership. Maluleke's report on the financial and audit outcomes of SA’s 257 municipalities in 2022 showed that only 38 municipalities received clean audits, down from 41 last year. Of the 38 municipalities with clean audits, 21 were in the Western Cape.

Some 16 municipalities had not submitted enough information to be audited at all, while 15 received a disclaimed audit opinion – meaning they could show little or no evidence for what is reflected in their financial statements.
