August launched in 2021, offering its products from pads to tampons online without a sales tax before expanding to Target stores in April this year. As part of its campaign to spread awareness about the tampon tax, August is reimbursing customers for the tax they have to pay at a Target for their menstrual products by asking people to text a picture of their receipt.

When creating August, Okamoto said she wanted an effectively absorbent and eco-friendly product for someone on their period. Charging a sales tax was never an option. The company plans to reimburse people for taxes paid on their menstrual products until every state is tampon tax free"Obviously, we lose money from it, but it's a hiccup we want to take because as a business we care a lot about making an impact regardless of the financial component of it," Okamoto said."I think that we also know that the more we stand by our values, the more loyal a lot of our community will be.
