So when you hear about declining productivity, you can be sure you’ll see its impact in your bank account, particularly if you’re a worker who relies on income from labour, rather than assets. As Tombe writes, “Simply put: lower productivity almost always means lower living standards.”

Add to this a federal government that discourages, if not actively limits, competition. If a large corporation has no meaningful competitors, they won’t feel compelled to boost innovation and efficiency. If a small business or potential entrepreneur feels competition is stifled, why bother? There’s a broad sense the game is rigged in favour of the same handful of oligopolistic winners, no matter how promising new business ideas and methods may be.
